WASHINGTON —President Obama’s proposal to open vast expanses of American coastlines to oil and natural gas drilling drew criticism from both sides in the drilling debate.
The plan, which Mr. Obama said would balance the need to produce more domestic energy while protecting natural resources, would allow drilling along the Atlantic coastline, the eastern Gulf of Mexico and the north coast of Alaska. It would end a longstanding moratorium on exploration from the northern tip of Delaware to the central coast of Florida, covering 167 million acres of ocean.
Drilling our coasts will doing nothing to lower gas prices or create energy independence,” Michael Brune, executive director of the Sierra Club, said in a statement. It will only jeopardize beaches, marine life, and coastal tourist economies, all so the oil industry can make a short-term profit.”
On the other hand, Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell called Mr. Obama’s proposal “a step in the right direction, but a small one that leaves enormous amounts of American energy off limits.”

I remember when Sarah Palin was talking about "Drill Baby Drill"! I used to think Upside was going to blow(or whatever) his circuit breaker when he would hear her say that. LMAO... How'd you feel if Obama was standing behind ya Upside saying, "We, got to,...Drill, ...baby drill"?

Obama is playing both sides. He knows we need to do offshore drilling to rid ourselves of foreign oil. He also knows that while we transition to alt energy we will still need a LOT of oil in the future.
He is pleasing the republicans now, but what he wants is to cram some massive global warming bill full of crap.

Interesting... A democrat opening up offshore drilling. This might actually turn into something concrete. Usually it's the republicans that make this move and then as soon as the dems get in they stop it from happening. If this does move forward, it might hurt Obama's chances for re-election tho. I know a few hardcore enviro-democrats that voted for him that are flipping out about this.
Personally, I think it's a step in the right direction for a SHORT TERM fix for our energy problems. As long as we limit our impact and realize that the solution is not "drill baby drill" everywhere in the US there is oil, I say, go for it.
Also, everyone here should know my opinion on using coal for energy production and I hope Obama cuts coal out of any "future" energy plans he might have, but I am not going to hold my breath... Then again, maybe I should.
Just my 2c anyway. NR.

Archer Fullingim used to say something to the same effect, but it involved the reader's throwing the (news)paper across the room. He was a champion of strong weekly papers, and a critic of milktoast "weakly" papers:

A cargo of Iraqi Basrah Light crude oil bound for the U.S. Gulf Coast was on a supertanker that was hijacked off the coast of Somalia yesterday, the Associated Press reported. Valero Energy Corp., which owns the oil, valued at more than $200 million, said it can replace the oil before the Samho Dream’s estimated arrival date of May 10.
Saudi Aramco, the world’s largest state-owned oil company, raised official selling prices for light crude grades for customers in the U.S. and Asia for May, it said yesterday.
Aramco set the price for its Extra Light crude oil for May loadings for U.S. buyers at a premium of $1.35 a barrel over the Argus Sour Crude Index, 40 cents higher than April. The discount for shipments of light-grade crude to the U.S. narrowed 20 cents to 40 cents below ASCI a barrel.

I realize this is anecdotal, but when I was camping recently I had occasion to ask a neighbor camper for help. I needed someone to simply be aware of my campsite for about half an hour, while I ran into town so I wouldn't get ripped off.
I knocked on the trailer door of my nearest "neighbor" and got no answer. I waited as long as I could, then knocked on their other "second" door--that's when I noticed the "NOBAMA" bumper sticker on their truck.
Chuckling to myself, I simply moved to the *next* neighbor, who has a dark-complected mate, maybe black or maybe Indian. Who cares? Anyway, I had noticed this, watching the mom overseeing her two darling children at play.
Suffice it to say, the dude was more than happy to help out, same as I would have been for him, or the Nobama guy, for that matter.
But the NObama folks? No, shoot no--can't be bothered.
