House passes resolution that states Obama was born in Hawaii, 378-0. This evening, the House passed a resolution sponsored by Rep. Neil Abercrombie (D-HI) that commemorates Hawaii’s 50th anniversary as a U.S. state by a vote of 378-0. The resolution also contains this provision: “Whereas the 44th President of the United States, Barack Obama, was born in Hawaii,” a measure that some GOP members may have had trouble supporting. However, many of the Republican representatives who at expressed at least subtle doubt that Obama was not born in the U.S. voted for the resolution. Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN), who had earlier in the day prevented the resolution from coming to a voice vote on the House floor, and Rep. Bill Posey (R-FL), who sponsored a bill requiring presidential candidates to prove natural-born citizenship, both voted for the resolution. Rep. John Campbell (R-CA), a co-sponsor of Posey’s bill who expressed doubt about Obama’s citizenship last week on MSNBC, did not vote.
Update Salon's Alex Koppelman says TP attacked Bachmann unfairly in our previous post because Bachmann was simply "playing her part" because "the House had already decided to postpone the votes on all of the resolutions being considered under a suspension of the rules until Monday evening." But the Hawaii resolution was only one of three resolutions that the GOP forced a vote on. Approximately 20 measures were considered today, most of which passed by voice vote.Comments 91 SharePermalink

Hawaii health director insists Obama natural-born. Last October, Hawaii’s state health director, Dr. Chiyome Fukino, had tried to dispel false rumors emanating from so-called “birthers” that Barack Obama was not born in the United States. But now that right-wing (and some mainstream) media and GOP members of Congress have been advancing the conspiracy theory over the last several months, Fukino issued another statement yesterday insisting that Obama was born in Hawaii:
“I, Dr. Chiyome Fukino, director of the Hawai’i State Department of Health, have seen the original vital records maintained on file by the Hawai’i State Department of Health verifying Barrack Hussein Obama was born in Hawai’i and is a natural-born American citizen. I have nothing further to add to this statement or my original statement issued in October 2008 over eight months ago….”
CNN’s Lou Dobbs, the most prominent mainstream media figure advancing the myth, has said that Hawaii officials “had destroyed Obama’s original 1961 birth certificate without citing a source.”

Meanwhile, in the works is a new birthday cake tax. By creating a new tax on birthday cakes Democrats argue it will help lower the consumption of cake and fight obesity....oh and of course raising 50 billion in 5 years.

Poll: Majority of Republicans are birthers. A new DailyKos/Research2000 poll reveals the shocking news that 58 percent of Republicans sympathize with the far-right birthers. Twenty-eight percent don’t believe that President Obama was born in the U.S., and another 30 percent aren’t sure. The birther sentiment was strongest amongst people older than 60 and people living in the South. Politico’s Glenn Thrush asks, “When do we start a serious dialog about the Birther movement being a proxy for racism that is unacceptable to articulate in more direct terms?”
Update In a Los Angeles Times op-ed, political satirist Bill Maher writes that “it's so important that we the few, the proud, the reality-based attack this stuff before it has a chance to fester and spread.”

GOP congressman co-sponsoring birther bill won’t show his birth certificate. Last week, Politico asked the 11 House Republicans co-sponsoring the so-called “birther bill” — legislation requiring presidential candidates to prove they were born in the United States — to provide their own birth certificates. While a number of them complied, Rep. Randy Neugebauer (R-TX) explicitly refused to show his proof of birth. His staff instead sent a one-line e-mail response: “Congressman Neugebauer will not be submitting a copy of his birth certificate.” Rep. Ted Poe (R-TX) did not respond to the request at all.

Sigh...the childishness of grown people is astounding. He's in. He's been in for half a year now and he isn't going anywhere. Every legitimate source has said he is natural born. The entire birther movement was started as a internet conspiracy with an undisclosed source.
