Couple Ordered to Stop Holding Bible Study at Home Without Permit
Thursday, May 28, 2009

Print ShareThisPastor David Jones and his wife Mary have been told that they cannot invite friends to their San Diego, Calif. home for a Bible study — unless they are willing to pay tens of thousands of dollars to San Diego County.

"On Good Friday we had an employee from San Diego County come to our house, and inform us that the Bible study that we were having was a religious assembly, and in violation of the code in the county." David Jones told FOX News.

"We told them this is not really a religious assembly — this is just a Bible study with friends. We have a meal, we pray, that was all," Jones said.

A few days later, the couple received a written warning that cited "unlawful use of land," ordering them to either "stop religious assembly or apply for a major use permit," the couple's attorney Dean Broyles told San Diego news station 10News.

But the major use permit could cost the Jones' thousands of dollars just to have a few friends over.

For David and Mary Jones, it's about more than a question of money.

"The government may not prohibit the free exercise of religion," Broyles told FOX News. "I believe that our Founding Fathers would roll over in their grave if they saw that here in the year 2009, a pastor and his wife are being told that they cannot hold a simple Bible study in their own home."

"The implications are great because it’s not only us that’s involved," Mary Jones said. "There are thousands and thousands of Bible studies that are held all across the country. What we’re interested in is setting a precedent here — before it goes any further — and that we have it settled for the future."

The couple is planning to dispute the county's order this week.

If San Diego County refuses to allow the pastor and his wife to continue gathering without acquiring a permit, they will consider a lawsuit in federal court.

does it say how many people were showing up?
that's the only reason that i can think of that it would be reasonable to do this.

i suppose if he was not a Pastor they would allow him to do it a this home? it is his business after all [Confused]

CA is a whacky place, i liked it, but i don't miss it either.

note the source on this article:

Pastor Says County Wants Him to Get Bible Study Permit
05/29/2009

A San Diego County, Calif., pastor who hosts weekly Bible study at his home is upset because the county would like him to purchase an expensive permit to continue the practice.

The county is concerned because the pastor, David Jones, hosts about 15 people every week, and the traffic and parking in the neighborhood can create issues for neighbors, law enforcement or other frequent users of the street. But also at issue is the fact that the area is not zoned for religious assembly. A county inspector reportedly came to the home during a recent Bible study and informed the pastor’s wife of the violation.

The couple has received a written warning, which requires them to either cease the practice or apply for a major-use permit. Jones and his wife have no intent of buy the permit and if they are required to stop the Bible study, they may pursue a federal lawsuit.

i had issues with the California zoning Nazis too... they are some of th emost officious people i have ever tried to deal with. i gave up after it became obvious they really expected me to pay out 70 grand in plans for a simple glass blowing studio.

that was 70 gran for the plans ONLY... and they would not allow gas or electric to be turned on without the plans

Illegal alien invasion, 21 BILLION in the red, rampant crime, out of control spending, high taxes, in your face homosexuality parades and lifestyles, an energy structure out of whack (seen with the enron scandal), destructive and broken government, extreme viewed politicians....top that off with the big earthquakes waiting to happen, wildfires, the worst pollution in the air in the country....I mean wow.

sounds like you don't want to live there? good thing you don't have to huh? [Big Grin]

i had a blast there, they have alot of problems that go along with anyplace where there's lotsa people....

driving on the hiways was an adventure every single time...

CA was one of the first states to pass restrictions on raising taxes tho Cash, that's where alot of their problems started. they didn't have enough money to build new schools and roads as the population grew...

gotta pay to play, don't wanna pay? no play. pay your taxes, it's a duty that nobody likes.

i strongly beleive in living in a free society, but that really means you should be able to do and take whatever you want, but you have to pay for it. people wanna marry goats? or have five spouses? i don't care as long as they aren't doing it to me... the gays are in th efaces of people now because they got something taken from them and they want it back, no doubt you would be in peoples faces too if you lost the right to ______________ (pick one)... the court did rule that they had the right.

i don't like the idea of same-sex couple adopting kids, but you cannot make them infertile, so what's the use?

i predict the prop 8 will be overturned next time it's on the ballot. too many people are now realising that it really is about freedom.

having been happily married to woman for over twenty years? it won't affect me. my kids are are straight, it won't affect them...

calling it marriage is a stretch IMO<
but civil unions got banned so they have little choice but to go after their rights...

I could have a blast there, in the right places. I have a lot of friends out there that I need to go see. Its just that I doubt I could live there. Only place that really looked good to me was a condo on the Pacific Highway in Huntington Beach. $600K. It would be a vacation place for me. Living there would drive me nuts, and make me extremely paranoid. Small doses is all I could take.

Nope....I was raised baptists.....still believe in all of it, but have no use for organized religion.

I love beer too btw.....trouble is that I would drink it front of other baptists; so they kicked me out....(not really).

But I have figured out how to keep them from coming to my house and trying to get me come back to church.......I offered the preacher and the three ladies with him a beer....it took them about three minutes to find a polite way to end the visitation! That is a true story, happened bout 3 months ago.....lots of fun!!

yeah, i haven't been visited by any o' them since 9-11...

i was in CA then and moved to NE where i lived way out int eh country so they didn't find me there, and then i moved here, and i don't think there's any here in MS.

the Baptists do get upset easy, the JW's actually seem to like being messed with cuz it gives them more faith to muster or something...

i've had 'em come upon me while i was laying under a car putting in a trasnmission and had 'em sit there for an hour keeping me company while i worked.. i think those are the ones i tried to convince that aliens had artificially inseminated Mary and well, you get the picture... lot's o'fun [Big Grin]

One time when some JW came to my ex's house I had just got done slamming beers, and her and her friend where in another room making loud lesbian sex noises so they could hear at the front door. I told them after pausing to listen...that now was not the best time and they should try another day.

Thinking that I would get rid of them they left, and came BACK like they said. We invited them in and let them talk to us while again...slamming beers this time in front of them and smoking as well. It was all fun and games.

I thought some of the biggest drinkers were baptists right behind catholics.
