IMO we turned the corner from a blue collar producer nation to a white collar resource manager nation forty years ago. With the producer side of the economy shrinking in its ability to support the white collar side, efficiency is key to success. However, our markets and government as it stands now rely on inefficiency to create more opportunities for flow of wealth which is how they measure economic health. The socialist ideas you see popping up (nationwide mass transit, Health-care, Federally owned insurance companies) are attempts at efficiency within an inefficient framework.
Capitalism isn't dead, but the ideology of what constitutes successful capitalism is going to shift dramatically over this next decade.

Capitalism is far from dead in America and for the most part it is alive and well in Western Europe.
The anwer is IMHO is weather it is able to serve a society?
This is the 2nd large scale financial failing of the system 1929 and ours 2008. Both are the product of a deregulated system gone wild with greed and both took massive amounts of tax payer money to stop the slaughter,which is in itself a socialist remedy that the big capitalist slobber up like hogs at a feeding frenzy and don't show one bit of shame in taking the funds.
Is the beloved system of greed and corrution dead no but it sure deserves to be regulated and constrained to make sure it dose not do anymore damage to society. And this go around the people that were in chage of this crime be held accountable. Not to benifit like the S&L scam that McCain was part of.

You left out the enormous federal buyouts that were necessitated by the Reagan financial disaster of free market idiocy they called "trickle down economics". By whatever name you try to disguise it, the nonsense of the Utopian free market inevitably allows the economy to become tools of greed and corruption....it can never work and we have repeated experimental failures with never a single hint of success for proof.

hey, me told ya the bailouts, bannings etc. were the wrong way to go about this mess... no one learns a lesson, the system doesn't improve like it did after the mess of 1929, etc. etc. It should be survival of the fittest on Wall Street and the ones who don't survive get replaced by other companies who learn from their mistakes... such as small to medium sized companies who do not get the chance to grow to the Big Boys size because of a monopolistic hold of a few in the industry... so perhaps some socialism mixed in with capitalism is the answer...

Not really a true socialist society buys or takes over what is good leaves the bad to die.
We like a good capitalist society by all the capitalists mistakes,bad investments,and debt. Give the ceo's millions in severence pay and let the part of the company that is profitable keep on running under a loose management.
Then like the S&L swindle let them buy back everything we took at a fire sale for a dime on the dollar and leave the share holders holding the bag.
Thats a capitalist state and thats how a capitalist uses tax payer money. And mark my words McCain will do just that if he is president

Does no one realize that, since Alaska's total budget is mostly paid via oil (and most of the rest via Federal funds), that state is pragmatically anti any effort that would lower the cost of or the amount of oil used?
Thus, anything done to eliminate our dependence on oil or to develop alternative types of energy production or toward reducing global warming or reducing pollution is acting against Alaskan wealth.
Let me correct my query:
Does no one, other than Alaska, realize that......
