it makes me wonder if they have any clue what the cultural representation of what they are singing is or they just like the sound.

my bet is they just like the sound.

the costumes of the musicians are also instersting. how do other cultures see US?

It's like when we sing Italian or whatever. I guarantee they all worked hard to get the pronunciation right but I doubt they went through the meaning of the words more than once or twice.

And the big deal about this video is? ... I saw this like 20 years ago on TV the day of the concert... It was a rock festival in which American bands were allowed to play in Moscow for first time together... bands like Motley Crue, Ozzy, Bon Jovi, Scorpions etc.. played it ... so I am pretty sure they were aware it was a american song and such... the Leningrad Cowboys are a band that never take themselves serious and like to do cover songs...
