THis is the kind of crap that peeves me off!!! So I wonder if I should lie and cheat this year's taxes. Maybe I'll get away with it and if not then I'll just pay up to avoid penalties. Worth a shot right!?! What FOOLS they are and are becoming!!!!!!

By JOHN COCHRAN

Dec. 11, 2006 — At Internal Revenue Service headquarters, there are a lot of red faces after they admitted they paid out $200 million in bogus refunds.

Sen. Charles Grassley, an Iowa Republican and longtime critic of the IRS, told ABC News, "They royally screwed up. And it's going to cost the honest taxpayer a lot of money."

Treasury Department investigators said the amount lost actually is more than $300 million.

"It was sort of the worst case scenario," said Michael Phillips, deputy inspector general at the Treasury Department. "What could go wrong did go wrong. And yes, some money is lost and cannot be regained."

All because the IRS paid $20 million for a new computer system that failed — big time.

"The IRS and computers mix like oil and water," said Pete Sepp of the National Taxpayers Union. "And you can put them together, but eventually everything falls apart."

The IRS hoped the new computers would easily spot tax frauds, such as people who claim suspiciously high deductions for things like gifts to charity and medical expenses. But last year, the company developing the new system warned the IRS it might not be ready come tax season in the spring of 2006.

Sure enough, it wasn't ready. And to make matters worse, the IRS had shut down its backup system.

"They should have ensured that the new system was going to work before they shut the old system down," said Phillips, of the Treasury Department. The IRS said it's now too late and too difficult to recover most of the fraudulent refunds.

"The management systems of both the IRS and its contractor to improve our automated refund fraud detection system were insufficient and are unacceptable," IRS Commissioner Mark Everson said in a written statement. "We have initiated appropriate action against IRS employees who failed to act responsibly, up to and including dismissal. … The IRS is moving aggressively to fix this problem."
That did not entirely placate an angry Grassley.

"For the honest taxpayer, it's kind of a case of they're seeing themselves as a sucker, paying their honest taxes," he said. "And they see other people that are fraudulent getting away with it."

So, if you got an undeserved refund, you can probably keep it — unless your conscience hurts.

As for you taxpayers who are stuck with the $320 million bill, it was your money. And it's gone.

Unfair? Yes.

But if Halliburton, Bechtel, Fluor, Parsons, the Washington Group, ET. AL. lost a few bucks? Who cares.

At least actual American citizens got the money.

Stupidity = "They should have ensured that the new system was going to work before they shut the old system down," said Phillips, of the Treasury Department. The IRS said it's now too late and too difficult to recover most of the fraudulent refunds.

Our money = As for you taxpayers who are stuck with the $320 million bill, it was your money. And it's gone.

Liars and cheats win = "For the honest taxpayer, it's kind of a case of they're seeing themselves as a sucker, paying their honest taxes," he said. "And they see other people that are fraudulent getting away with it."

So now its time to shutdown more libraries?!?
And how do we know most of the winners (losers) in this situation weren't Gov employees and officials. I bet they make up most of that 300 mill...

You could very well be right. Abolish the IRS, I say.

Only 200 million? When the right hand has absolutely no idea what the left hand is doing, 200 million is nothing. Comparatively speaking, that's probably one of their better years. Unless that's in addition to the normal errors and blunders, then I guess it was a sub-par year.

here's my deal: hope the legislators are on the ball enough to keep the IRS out of pockets in any, shall we say, "aggressive" attempt to recoup the loss...

Moneyx3 don't even get me started on the IRS and the government with their "bright" ideas...it's endless... [Roll Eyes]

I'm still trying to figure out why AFTER my divorce the same 2 people with the same amount of income and the same dependents when seperated get nearly $6k back at tax time...yet when married and filed together had to pay? AND? the kids in college get grants? but when the parents were together got nothing? hell getting divorce gave the children about $20K a year for refunds and college help...

What did I learn? Get Divorced when your child is a Senior in highschool...and his/her college is paid for...PLUS you'll get a tax refund...

I see $200m in the article...where you getting $6.5 million?

Anyway, my point is they need to eat it, just as traders do when we make a mistake. I dammmm sure don't wanna find out the IRS "came after" taxpayers to cover their mistake.

We're on our way. We'll hand deliver them from Tex's limo. Speaking of Christmas cards, some of you here have my adddress and so far, nothing. What's causing the delay?

Actually, the more I think about it, forget the card, I want gifts, expensive ones too. UPS delivers on Christmas Eve so you have 12 days to get my gifts to me. If it's too heavy for UPS you should get in touch with a freight hauling company by the end of the week. Enjoy your shopping!

Gift cards are always an option too although somewhat impersonal. That'd be fine if you're really stuck for an original idea.
