A series of earthquakes were felt across Hawaii early Sunday morning. The strongest one had a preliminary magnitude of 6.5, the Pacific Tsunami Center said.

That earthquake triggered a landslide that blocked a major highway on Hawaii Island, the center said. Power outages were reported across the state and there were unconfirmed reports of injuries, according to the State Civil Defense. Problems with communication prevented more definite reports.

The quake occurred at 7:07 a.m. local time, 10 miles north-northwest of Kailua Kona, a town on the west ...

2.6, 2.7 earthquakes registered near Mount Rainier

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

GREENWATER, Wash. -- Two small earthquakes were recorded Saturday south of this town near Mount Rainier, one week after a larger quake was reported near the mountain's summit.

A magnitude 2.7 earthquake was recorded by the Pacific Northwest Seismograph Network at 8:30 a.m., 20 miles south of Greenwater at a depth of 3.3 miles. The quake occurred over an hour after a 2.6 magnitude earthquake in the same location and at a depth of 4 miles.

There were no reports of people feeling the earthquakes. No damage was reported.

The small "micro" quakes came one week after a larger, magnitude 4.5 earthquake struck the same area, seven miles east of Mount Rainier's summit Oct. 7.

Two earthquakes shudder Japan; no immediate reports of casualties, damage
10.13.2006, 09:38 PM

TOKYO (XFN-ASIA) - A 5.3-magnitude earthquake has struck near Tokyo, seismologists said, the second quake close to Japan in a few hours.

The tremor struck at 5.37 am (2137 GMT) with its epicenter 102 kilometers southeast of the capital, the US Geological Survey said. It originated 23 kilometers under the sea.

There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties.

Earlier, a 6.3-magnitude undersea earthquake struck 435 kilometers northeast of Kuril'sk, on the Kuril Islands, the USGS said.

North Korea`s nuke test triggered earthquakes: Geologists
Mumbai, Oct 14: Did the nuclear test by North Korea on October 9 trigger earthquakes in the region? Apparently yes, if geologists are to be believed.

The earthquake pattern between October 9 and 13 in East Asia, geologists say, was due to a disturbance in natural stress conditions of the subduction zone extending from Kuril island in the north to Phillipines islands in the south.

They said it was apparent that the nuclear explosion did create stress along the trench. In the last two months, such earthquake "clusters" were not observed in the zone, according to geologists from the department of earth sciences in the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) here.

Between October 9 and 11, the Phillippines islands experienced nearly 10 quakes with magnitudes varying from 4.2 to 6.3 on the Richter scale.

Taiwan recorded a 5.6-magnitude quake, while Japan recorded a 5.8-magnitude temblor on October 10. Similarly, Kuril islands experienced a 6-magnitude quake yesterday, they said.

A plot of the epicentres on the tectonic map of East Asia clearly demonstrates the nuclear test released stress along the subduction zone, the geologists pointed out.

A 5.8-magnitude quake shook northern Japan on Tuesday evening, sparking fears that it was a second nuclear test by North Korea but this was proved wrong later.

If that's indeed true, then it's also a good argument for shutting any nuclear testing down, (by anybody).

I'd vote for that.

Too bad it won't be on the ballot in November. LOL

Bush 'is planning nuclear strikes on Iran's secret sites'

By Philip Sherwell in Washington
(Filed: 09/04/2006)

Alec Russell: So is America going to bomb Iran?
Jack Straw: Iran attack would be 'nuts'

The Bush administration is planning to use nuclear weapons against Iran, to prevent it acquiring its own atomic warheads, claims an investigative writer with high-level Pentagon and intelligence contacts.

President George W Bush is said to be so alarmed by the threat of Iran's hard-line leader, Mahmoud Ahmedinejad, that privately he refers to him as "the new Hitler", says Seymour Hersh, who broke the story of the Abu Ghraib Iraqi prisoner abuse scandal.

Mahmoud Ahmedinejad: 'The new Hitler'

Some US military chiefs have unsuccessfully urged the White House to drop the nuclear option from its war plans, Hersh writes in The New Yorker magazine. The conviction that Mr Ahmedinejad would attack Israel or US forces in the Middle East, if Iran obtains atomic weapons, is what drives American planning for the destruction of Teheran's nuclear programme.

Hersh claims that one of the plans, presented to the White House by the Pentagon, entails the use of a bunker-buster tactical nuclear weapon, such as the B61-11, against underground nuclear sites. One alleged target is Iran's main centrifuge plant, at Natanz, 200 miles south of Teheran.

Although Iran claims that its nuclear programme is peaceful, US and European intelligence agencies are certain that Teheran is trying to develop atomic weapons. In contrast to the run-up to the Iraq invasion, there are no disagreements within Western intelligence about Iran's plans.

Iran factfile

This newspaper disclosed recently that senior Pentagon strategists are updating plans to strike Iran's nuclear sites with long-distance B2 bombers and submarine-launched missiles. And last week, the Sunday Telegraph reported a secret meeting at the Ministry of Defence where military chiefs and officials from Downing Street and the Foreign Office discussed the consequences of an American-led attack on Iran, and Britain's role in any such action.

The B61 is a variable-yield bomb designed for carriage by high-speed aircraft. It has a streamlined casing capable of withstanding supersonic flight speeds. The weapon is 11 ft 8 in (3.58 m) long, with a diameter of about 13 in (33 cm). Basic weight is about 700 lb (317.5 kg), although the weights of individual weapons may vary depending on version and fuse/retardation configuration.

The newest variant is the B61 Mod 11, a hardened penetration bomb with a reinforced casing (according to some sources, containing depleted uranium) and a delayed-action fuse, allowing it to penetrate several metres into the ground before detonating, damaging fortified structures further underground [2]. The Mod 11 weighs about 1,200 lb (541 kg). Developed from 1994, the Mod 11 went into service in 1997 replacing the older megaton-yield B53 bomb, a limited number of which had been retained for anti-fortification use. About 50 Mod 11 bombs have been produced, their warheads converted from Mod 7 bombs. At present, the primary carrier for the B61 Mod 11 is the B-2 Spirit.
