With the army desperate for recruits, should college students be packing their bags for Canada? Uncle Sam wants you. He needs you. He'll bribe you to sign up. He'll strong-arm you to re-enlist. And if that's not enough, he's got a plan to draft you.

Thats a load of horse poo, the last 5-6 months recruiting goals have exceeded the numbers. Recruiters have meet 106-108% of their goals.
There isnt going to be a draft.
However I personally thing everyone should have to serve 2 years in the military to have the right to vote. I think society would turn out much better.

As for mandatory service, that's just a joke. You think the desertion and suicide rates are high now?
(And most people don't want to vote anyway, LOL)
On 23 Sept 2003, the Defense Department Website called "Defend America" posted a notice for people to join local draft boards. "If a military draft becomes necessary," the notice explained, "approximately 2,000 Local and Appeal Boards throughout America would decide which young men, who submit a claim, receive deferments, postponements or exemptions from military service, based on Federal guidelines."
In early November, that notice started to receive media attention, with articles from the Associated Press, the Seattle Post-Intelligencer , the Oregonian, the Toronto Star, the BBC, and London Guardian (unsurprisingly, none of the major papers or networks in the US covered it).
In a familiar turn of events, the notice suddenly disappeared from the Website. (Thanks to LG for pointing this out.) We've mirrored the page and posted the text below.

Key date there...Sept 2003. That is when the war was fresh and people didnt want to go straight into a war, of course recruiting would be down. Leaders didnt know how the war would effect enlistment.

Yeah, wait until we need troops for Iran. It's going to make Iraq look like a cakewalk.

The desertion and suicide rates aren't high.
Compulsory service to the country would instill a sense of nationalism as well as core values the nation was built upon but the MTV generation has lost, such as respect, discipline, honor, loyalty etc.
Hell it might even solve the damn obesity problem in this country too.

From Gordon: "Yeah, wait until we need troops for Iran. It's going to make Iraq look like a cakewalk."
You know, speaking of the probable upcoming conflict in Iran, President Carter's old nemesis, and the confrontation you must be anticipating with Syria as well, I didn't think you were in favor of war Gordon. Personally I think the war will never spread to Iran. But if it does, those troop needs will be alot less with an already established "beach-head" in Iraq.

I'm opposed to war, but our "leaders" certainly are not.
