People: Fonda says her past keeps her from protesting war

JANE FONDA: Vietnam-era activism left her with “too much baggage.”

Jane Fonda says she would like to tour the country and speak out against U.S. involvement in Iraq, but her controversial history of Vietnam War protests leaves her with "too much baggage."

"I wanted to do a tour like I did during the Vietnam War, a tour of the country," the Oscar-winning actress said Monday on ABC's "Good Morning America." "But then Cindy Sheehan filled in the gap, and she is better at this than I am. I carry too much baggage."

Sheehan, whose soldier son, Casey, died in Iraq in 2004, has been a leading anti-war figure.

Fonda, 68, said that during a recent national book tour, war opponents - including some Vietnam veterans - asked her to speak out.

Her political activities protesting the Vietnam War, including a trip to North Vietnam in 1972, have long made her a target of veterans.

Fonda, who won Oscars for 1971's "Klute" and 1978's "Coming Home," recently returned from a trip to Argentina with ex-husband Ted Turner. Fonda said she and Turner remain close.

"He's my favorite ex-husband," the actress said.

The rumblings of guilt for turning in American POWs who asked her for help? Could it be?

I guess she just doesn't have the energy for slandering soldiers anymore. All that money has made her tired.

Sad really.

Wealth even makes a commie soft she laughs about it but she was one I know she had read the books and considerd her self a class warrior her and her girl friend Joan who looked up in the skies of N Viet Nam and said good as an American plane was shot down. It was a real mess in thoes days .At the time she went the polls were showing anywhere for 65% to 80% against the war so not much was thought of it.Think things were bad then suppose you had this bunch at the helm then . Just another error of states manship that was.I condider Bush and Chenney no better than Jane and Joan I wish they would all leave the damn country together. They have all in there own way screwed it up

Yeah, well her little stunt with the POW's up in Hanoi sealed her fate with me. She will always be Hanoi Jane.

Nah, didn't give much credence to what they said. Heard it from dad and all of his buddies.

I would love to read McCains mind of what he thinks of her, i am sure he loved it when he was a P.O.W. and she was in Hanoi shooting off her mouth. I still like that bumper sticker that reads: Vietnam Veterans are not Fonda Jane.
