Thursday, 10/27/05 Memphis' budget deficit much larger than expected

MEMPHIS — The city's budget deficit is nearly twice as big as previous estimates, and covering the shortfall has left the government's savings account nearly empty.
Chief Financial Officer Robert Lipscomb told council members Tuesday that the deficit for last fiscal year stands at $25.8 million.
are other cities having the same problems?

I can not believe that with all the taxes we pay, not only do we pay income tax, we pay sales tax, property tax, school tax. And I'm sure there's more taxes I'm not thinking of.
After all that we're still creating deficits! WTH is going on?

Chiron was just given 62 million$ in fed money to "develop" a bird flu vaccine...
there isn't one yet... chiron is the comapny that last year got it's production license pulled for having a "dirty vaccine" factory... now? they are getting a bonus??

Devlope a vacine for a strain of the flu that they don't have yet... Interesting... I love when they talk about the bird flu on TV and they talk about vaccine.. They need the damn virus before they can create a damn vaccine!
Our country does idiotic things like this while we cut programs..
How about we look at some real issues like fixing HEALTHCARE.
If anyone else owns their own company they know how much healthcare costs.
Alot of companies are dropping coverage and increasing employees % of the cost.
Costs me almost $1k a month for health insurance just for my family.
Huge companies like walmart aren't affected yet because they hire alot of older folks on medicare and poor people on government assistance, but other companies that don't have this luxery (because they need higher skilled labor) are taking a beating and if they don't do something about it over the next 5 years it's going to be more then a crisis.
Instead we throw money at ridiculous wastes like giving Big Oil Tax Breaks.
Giving Drug companies basically a free for all with drug approvals that only increase thecost of health care (and in prescription drugs case people have to DIE in the thousands from drugs like VIOXX before they pull them and then still they want to put them back on the market!)
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
And there's people who don't see a problem!

Yes, and most cops speak of us as "civilians" and believe they are not engaged in "civil law", which amounts believing they are enforcing "martial law".
These mistakes in understanding a fundamental need to be 100% specific in defining things results in specious administering of law, both in the government and the law enforcement community.

In referance to the Healthcare syetem in the USA, it sucks, the reason why because its based on the $$$$ , as long as there is big money to be made by Insurance companys and hospitals ,doctors things will never change. Can you explain to me why when i get an asprin at the hospital it cost me $20 yet i can buy 250 for $5.00 at the local drug store. If people actually started to think they would see that nothing has changed in hundres of years we are all just poor working stiffs for the rich just like medivel times .

It's because of the monopolies in the drug industry just like in Oil.
They can price fix all they want and there's no control. And as long as Merck and Elli Lilly are funding our corrupt congressmen and administration they will rapidly destroy healthcare).
Then the government starts coming out with laws like protecting drug manufacturers from being sued. Tort reform is the biggest evil for healthcare.
Let's see, doctors are one of the leading causes of death in the US and we want to limit damages because apparently there's so many lawsuites it's causing the increase in health care.
Of course you never see any lawsuites and usually if you do they are from someone who got operated on the wrong BODY part or killed because the doctor left a tire iron in their chest.. DUH! Or died from one of their drugs.
It's pretty sad. Problem is, people just keep on taking these Drugs! There's a lot of people who think just to live they need to take 10 pills a day and I guarantee most people would be doing better or just as good without 95% of these chemical concotions. if people would only take life needed drugs instead of making prescription drugs their recreational drugs.
There are some good drugs like Blood pressure medicine and pain relievers. But alot of people are on drugs for the only reason to counteract the side effects of the other drugs they are taking.
Liptor and other statins are one of the biggest scams in the last 20 years.. Why? Because 40% of people who have heart attacks have normal of below cholestoral.
Yet, doctors still insist that lowering your cholesterol will help when there's plenty of documented facts that contradict these findings.
Of course Lipitor is a 20 billion a year money-maker.
Yet, after all these deaths from prescription drugs POT is still illegal.
