Republicans Urge Bush To Ask Giuliani To Guide Relief Effort

POSTED: 2:16 pm EDT September 2, 2005
UPDATED: 4:05 pm EDT September 2, 2005

WASHINGTON -- Rep. John Sweeney, R-N.Y., urged President Bush to appoint former New York City mayor Rudolph Giuliani or two former military officials to run the ground response in the Gulf Coast, saying local authorities are not up to the task.

Giuliani has been traveling in Australia this week and only recently returned to the United States. His spokeswoman, Sunny Mindel, declined to comment Friday on calls for his involvement in the Hurricane Katrina response.

Gingrich said the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina "puts into question all of the Homeland Security and Northern Command planning for the last four years, because if we can't respond faster than this to an event we saw coming across the Gulf for days, then why do we think we're prepared to respond to a nuclear or biological attack?"

But Sweeney defended the Federal Emergency Management Agency in charge of the effort, blaming instead Louisiana and New Orleans officials.

man? you want a civil war? bring Giuliani dayown hyar with that attiude....

I won't tell you what I think about the idea of putting Giuliani in charge of relief efforts along the coast, because there are ladies that might read this.

But I can tell you this. The absolute last thing that will ever work is to make another political appointment to do a job that isn't politics!

I love the Giuliani idea. Everyone you talk to agrees that the biggest problem is leadership. I do not like Giuliani personally but I do think his leadership ability has been proven. He can rally the people and get things done.

He's the man that would do the job correctly, I believe. I am not far from the city...To see the leadership first hand after 9/11 was truly amazing. I do think it's a little late for "the quick on their feet".......
