Some of the threads get very long as you all know.
AllStocks.com can close a thread. It would still be viewable but no post can be made to it.
At what length or ? would you like to see this happen if at all?

I think 8 pages is more than enough....
What type of file system would you use to archive the thread?

The files will stay where they are until we need to purge at some point because of server space issues. Don't see that in the near future.

I think that after about 5 pages (2-300 replies) would be best.

I've seen 5 pages in less then a day many times. I vote for 15 pages. After that point it's more of a hassle to read and scroll.

Perhaps in the first post when a thread is closed there could be a link to the old thread. This way some of the same information may not have to be re-posted and adding to the problem.
As far as the size of the thread goes....
I understand the "size" doesn't really matter. Not to me. At your discretion.

I dunno... I agree that long threads become a hassle, but I dont know about the idea. The thread itself is usually an indication of the stock. (Fr example, if I would just go through the first page, I KNOW that both IBZT and QBID are POPULAR stocks just based on the length of the threads. Plus, it makes it easier to go back to get links and see what people have to say rather than navigate through multiple threads. Much like the market itself, a forum is based on the supply and demand for information. If threads get long, there is a reason for that, so let them stay that way till the people posting cant take it anymore!!

actually, any chance of putting a flag in threads such that if a thread is inactive for 2 days or so, it'll be deleted? There are too many idle threads around.

I agree 100% along with everyone else...
5 - 10 pages max
If people love the stock soooooo much they should take the time to post a new thread.
It will keep the board fresh and possitive.

NOT SURE HOW IT WOULD BE DONE, Any thread starting and ending as a "symbol" 20pages. This would be the goto place for running commentary.
Any thread starting with a date 15 days.Dated material should be absorbed and acted on by this time. All other posts 7 days.
A limit on post length would be good.Post copied sometimes run many screens long, better a link for those who are intrested.
Really liked the reverse sequential posts(newest first}.
Also this entry screen would be nice to enter as it appears to help with formatting comments. VAN

if a post gets closed all the information that went into making it will get lost in the sauce, the only answer that I know of is what Paul said have a link to the old thread in the new thread. Personally I dont know why there is a problem with the large threads, I see more of a problem with people starting new ones for the same thing, opinions are scatered all over the place. one more thing that could use your attention Allstocks is the chat room, I posted the link to it in a post and when people that were interested tryed to use it they couldnt. only me and 2 other people made it in. Purl and opiate are 2 that had trouble getting in, I think that if the chat room worked it would save a lot of space in the posts cause little chit chat back and forth would be there and gone with out being saved.

Paul's idea sounds like a winner.
Either 10 or 15 pgs, with a link at or near the beginning link to any previous block with the same topic heading. Cleans the board and stills enables archiving.

I'd vary the "editing" based upon the board--this is the Micro Penny Stocks, Penny Stocks Under $0.10 board--it's the "Wild West" of the stock trading world.
I would not limit the posting to affect legitimate comment about a company. No locking threads, no deleting threads because they repeat a stock symbol already named in another thread.
Do lock or delete a thread if the content looks to be that of a "spammer," but if real comment is being made about companies then let the board run as members see fit--which is determined without any "active editing" by administrators.
On boards that might be considered to be for information on less "speculative" stocks, more active editing by administrators could make sense.
As an example of what I'm suggesting check the forums at gunbroker.com (I hang-out there a good bit)--they have an "Ask the Experts" board where most threads are locked after about 10 replies, but on their "General Discussion" board, threads are allowed to continue as long as members want them to.
