I have gotten into buying TV shows on DVD even at 45$ for some of them.

For one thing? I like being able to watch them without commercials, and not miss chunks if my schedule varies week to week, which it does all the time...

The shows i have liked best and recommend (these all have a Libertarian-living theme) are Jericho; Firefly; (and the follow up movie, Serenity) and for this season i really like Stargate Universe...

I am a big fan of Sci-Fi and stargates has alwys been (only) fairly good, but also fairly pulpy... Heinlen originally wrote a teenager pulp sci-fi story called Tunnel in the Sky, which may have been the first stargate sci-fi (i am not sure that it was the first but it was early)

In any case, Satrgate Universe has some great writing and characters that are likeable and hateable all at the same time... I like it much better than th eother Stargate series- Stargates are now one of, if not the most successful sci-fi series of TV show of all time...

Good choices glass. I have always Liked Firefly...and Serenity was a great conclusion to the storyline. And I was also happy with the improved writing and pace on SGU this season. Because....it....reallllllyyyyy....draggggggeddd....befooorrrrreee....thhhhiiiis ss......yyyyeeeeaaaarrrrr. Always took forever to get to the meat of the story. They could still speed things up a bit....but it is a huge improvement over last year IMO. I still hate that mid-season hiatus they do though.

I do the same thing Glassman...Work schedule makes it impossible to follow a TV show week to week...Sons of Anarchy and Entourage are two that I always buy when they come out on DVD...

Oh cmon I know SOME of you remember the great Alfred Hitchcock...one of my favorite old shows!

i have the hitchcock collection. he was a genius, and maybe the most influential director of all time... so much of his stuff requires you to get deeply involved in the movie that i think it's lost on alot of people today...

for history and military buffs? i highly recomend the Sharpes series

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0108108/

i haven't purchased it yet, but i watch them whenever they air, and have read every book...

it gives an interesting insight into the life of a ground warrior in the Napleonic times

It seems like Mash has been shown on more stations on TV for the longest period of time.

Might be a purchase if you want to watch shows in a row.

Although it is so readily available on TV and with the recording features of today hard to want to purchase.

I just download the Torrents..

I use thepiratebay.com or demonoid.com

Even if they aren't released on DVD yet...someone recorded and uploaded it.

here's the "thing" about that...

the Firefly series was canned by thenetwork way too soon... it seems to me that alot of th eshows i like are. by buying them i am showing finacial support to artists... i am an artist myself...

there is no better way to support art than to buy it.... all this grant crap just leads people to make garbage and pass it off as art IMO. [Wink]

it figures... bunch of idiots don't wnat to spend money on real art... they want a bunch of peopl to make fools of themselves on "reality" tv...

sign of the times i guess... i suppose i'll watch reruns of Dick Van Dyke tripping over his furniture...
