Hantavirus kills U.S. airman
EL PASO, Texas, Feb. 28 (UPI) -- Intensive cleaning is under way at U.S. military-range housing in New Mexico in the wake of the hantavirus death of an Arizona serviceman, reports said.

Senior Airman Leonard Hankerson Jr., 24, who was with the 56th Security Forces Squadron at Luke Air Force Base, Ariz., died Feb. 11 at Texas' Beaumont Army Medical Center of problems related to the disease spread by rodents, the El Paso (Texas) Times and Oakland (Calif.) Tribune reported.

The Oakland Tribune reported military personnel stationed at McGregor Range played with numerous dead mice in the military housing that is part of the U.S. Army's Fort Bliss, Texas, base.

Seven other military personnel had been treated for flu-like symptoms, four of which tested negative for the virus.

McGregor Range housing had been cleaned with bleach and similar cleaning was set for the Dona Ana Range also in New Mexico, a military spokeswoman said.

Greg Goff, whose airman stepson also was in the McGregor barracks, told the El Paso Times that the buildings "should have been (bull)dozed" because of roof holes and other disrepair.

In the case of HPS, the patient will usually receive antibiotics initially, until the diagnosis of HPS is certain.

During the onset of the cardiopulmonary phase, the patient may need to be hooked up to a ventilator, which will hopefully keep them breathing. In some occasions, antiviral medication (such as Ribavirin and Bradycor) will be administered intravenously, although it hasn't shown much promise when fighting HPS.

Schering-Plough appears to make Ribavirin

Cortech Inc. at one time had trials on Bradycor but it looks like they failed.

Looks like something too avoid rather than expliot. I'd say stick to bird flu stocks then...GNBT best of breed.

Yea, 50% mortality rate from inhaling rat poop airborne particles, that's gotta suck.
