Hawking Says Space Colonies Needed

HONG KONG -- The survival of the human race depends on its ability to find new homes elsewhere in the universe because there's an increasing risk that a disaster will destroy the Earth, world-renowned astrophysicist Stephen Hawking said Tuesday.

Humans could have a permanent base on the moon in 20 years and a colony on Mars in the next 40 years, the British scientist told a news conference.

Renowned astrophysicist Stephen Hawking from the University of Cambridge, front, is accompanied by his nurse during a visit at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology in Hong Kong Tuesday, June 13, 2006. Hawking, author of the global best-seller a "Brief History of Time", arrived in Hong Kong on Monday and plans to give a lecture on Tuesday. Hawking is on a six-day visit in Hong Kong before going to Beijing.

"We won't find anywhere as nice as Earth unless we go to another star system," added Hawking, who arrived in Hong Kong to a rock star's welcome Monday. Tickets for his lecture planned for Wednesday were sold out.

He added that if humans can avoid killing themselves in the next 100 years, they should have space settlements that can continue without support from Earth.

"It is important for the human race to spread out into space for the survival of the species," Hawking said. "Life on Earth is at the ever-increasing risk of being wiped out by a disaster, such as sudden global warming, nuclear war, a genetically engineered virus or other dangers we have not yet thought of."

He's a very bright individual. Of Course, dubya thinks he deals in fuzzy science.

When is someone going to sit dubya down and get it into his thick skull that he's too dumb to understand much and thing that are clear and simple to him are clearly illogical to most of us?

I agree with Mr. Hawkings 100%. The problem is most people either don't ever think about the possibility of the Earth being uninhabitable or don't care because they are betting it won't happen during their lifetime.

By the way Bdgee, what exactly is your obsession with Bush? Someone could post a thread about roller coaster rides and you would still find a way to throw in your liberal 2 cents about the evil dictator Bush. I think you are secretly in love with him but cannot admit it because the party would disown you.

I wonder if he got laid in the backstage VIP room?

I have no obsession with the idiot.

It is you with the obsession, goose stepping to his cadence and repeating whatever idiotic and poorly thought through view of the world that comes from the brilliance of dubya. You are no diffetent from a 1933 Nazi worshipoer of Adolph.....no guts to think for yourself and oh so appreciative of a fuhrer that issues pure hate and p--- poor logic for you to feast on.

By the way, you have once again proved you and your kind are too simple minded to have any idea what a liberal is (or a conservative). Get over it. Hilary ain't a liberal and neither are 90% of those you fools think are (and dubya ain't a conservative, just a crook).

By the way Bdgee, didn't Bush propose bases on the Moon and/or Mars?

I didn't hear your lover boy hero Clinton talking about bases on heavenly bodies... unless he was talking about his young plump interns....

Seems you are both ignorant and obsessed, NR.

Indeed Clinton did propose bases on other worlds. Sorry you are so busy memorizing the Party line that you skipped over that (several times) and didn't know about it.

That fact nor any other makes him any sort of hero to me. I worked hard to not let him get elected to begin with. Clearly, though, you are obsessed with the man. Otherwise, what the devil does he have to do with anything now?

Bush promised that there were WMDs in Iraq and that al Qeada had Saddam sponcered bases and militia in Iraq. All lies of course, but those are facts that overwhelm any other "fact" that one might discover about dubya.

Tex, Glassman and I are perfect candidates
for a space colony!

 -

As to Bush and space, pure political ploy.
Bush talks big but has no money in his mouth.

Bush makes lots of claims like these but never
follows through.

He constantly brags of his "No Child Left Behind"
but secretly cut funding to a point this effort
no longer exists; administrative, no results.

Space program, he never intended to fund nor
promote space exploration. Just another of
his long list of political lies.

Bush supports space colonies is mouth only I do agree with hawkins that we are about one hundred years max from wiping out the Earth for humans there will always be roaches and maybe Chenney. The real answer is to fight the battle here and change things. The big change would not be to elect anymore Bushes they laugh at folks like Green Peace. And you can take this to the bank thoes of you that are laughing now will not be if you are around in 50 years maybe a lot sooner A lot was done in the 60's.70's,80's, and 90's. but it is being unwound now and we will pay the price . I really think that thoes of you that don't think so I would not argue with you because you are believers that all ecologist are full of organic waste and are stupid lefties in the way of corporate profits and progress. glta

Purl,

I like your version of a space colony best. Got room for one more? LOL

A colony on the moon is doable and would advance science immeasurablly. Gotta learn more about health problems from long term low gravity situations and stuff but think of the possibilities. Instead of mining
Mexico we could mine the moon!
