New artificial disc provides alternative to spinal fusion

October 27, 2004

BY JIM RITTER Health Reporter Advertisement

The government on Tuesday approved a new surgical treatment for lower back pain -- an artificial disc made of high-tech plastic.

The artificial disc could be an alternative treatment for many of the 200,000 Americans who undergo spinal fusion surgery each year.

Vertebrae in the back are separated by shock-absorbing discs. When a disc shrinks, cracks or otherwise degenerates, it can cause pain in the back, buttocks and hips.

hmmmm..
we pay so much for our health care, but we seem to get it years later than the rest of the world...

It's not known whether artificial discs will wear out, like artificial knees and hips. But Stadlan said that in Europe, where the discs have been used for years, the devices are holding up well so far.

My wife had two upper discs removed with the fusion process. She's better but still in a lot of discomfort.

No one knows this exists or they don't tell you.

This is the procedure i want and doctor i have just seen.He told me i need neck and back surgery (no duh). But if you look at his procedure he has been doing 20 years. No one else is doing this or recommending it.It's outpatient procedure AMAZING.But 99.9 % of doctors do the major back surgerys.Read this you will be amazed.I found him about 9 months back doing DD and made him my treating Physcian.I am gonna fight comp to try to force them to let me have this surgery, for about 6 more months and if i can't beat them .I will just settle for alot less(get screwed). Then take all the settlement money And get the rest out of my house equity and pay it all to the doctor to get the surgery.Still like to try that machine 1st.Thanks

Thanks very interesting, would consider that before fusion. The procedure i want is very succesful but if it does'nt work you still have all these other options as i am finding out.Once you have fusion you're done. Thanks again.
