New artificial disc provides alternative to spinal fusion

The government on Tuesday approved a new surgical treatment for lower back pain -- an artificial disc made of high-tech plastic.
The artificial disc could be an alternative treatment for many of the 200,000 Americans who undergo spinal fusion surgery each year.
Vertebrae in the back are separated by shock-absorbing discs. When a disc shrinks, cracks or otherwise degenerates, it can cause pain in the back, buttocks and hips.
