Jim, I know that this board gets a lot of reads on the weekend and I have something that I think I should make folks aware of. Got an email purporting to be from Interactive Brokers, with whom I do have an account. Unfortunately, I cannot cut & paste the email because if I click on it anywhere it takes me to another page where my login, password, and email address are requested.

I know that there are many ways the bad guys are finding to hijack accounts, but this is the most sophisticated I have seen. The email looks very genuine, with the icon and logo reproduced nicely. The body of it basically said that they were doing a scheduled software upgrade, and by clicking on the link below you will begin the procedure of member details confirmation. These instructions sent to all IB members, apologize for inconveniences, etc., etc.

My first clue that is was a scam, other than wanting my login and password, was that the email showed up in the wrong account, not the one that IB has for me, but another one with swbell, and it was not addressed correctly, just got dumped into my account.

Anyhow, just wanted to put it out there so that people would be aware of what is (likely) going on.

dunno whether this is true or what, but seems like a few have accounts with IB...just a hedzup. Here's replies, showing evidence that the post was worthwhile:

'Spoofing' and 'Phishing' and Stealing Identities

FBI warns of latest expensive Internet traps and tricks
The FBI, Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and Earthlink have jointly issued a warning on how the growing ranks of Internet crooks are using new tricks called "phishing" and "spoofing" to steal your identity.

In an FBI press release, Assistant Director of the agency's Cyber Division, Jana Monroe says, "Bogus e-mails that try to trick customers into giving out personal information are the hottest, and most troubling, new scam on the Internet.

File a Complaint

Prior to filing a complaint with the Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3), please read the following information regarding terms and conditions. Should you have additional questions prior to filing your complaint, view FAQ for more information on inquiries such as:

* What details will I be asked to include in my complaint?
* What happens after I file a complaint?
* How are complaints resolved?
* Should I retain evidence related to my complaint?

this is the new FBI internet crime complaint site...

Welcome to IC3

The Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) is a partnership between the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the National White Collar Crime Center (NW3C).

it's been changed recently:

here's a recent list of internet "schemes" being perpetrated too:

i dunno how this NW3C came aboput, it sounds like another "Czar" position in the govt [Roll Eyes] ...

notice it is NOT a dotgov.... that bothers me, it appears to be a private entity:

The mission of NW3C is to provide a nationwide support system for agencies involved in the prevention, investigation, and prosecution of economic and high-tech crimes and to support and partner with other appropriate entities in addressing homeland security initiatives, as they relate to economic and high-tech crimes.

We are a congressionally-funded, non-profit corporation whose membership primarily comprises law enforcement agencies, state regulatory bodies with criminal investigative authority, and state and local prosecution offices.

While NW3C has no investigative authority itself, its job is to help law enforcement agencies better understand and utilize tools to combat economic and high-tech crime.

hmmmm.....

NW3C may be used as a source of funding for member agencies that are faced with budgetary shortfalls. Case Funding for agencies who are involved with a white collar, high tech or cyber crime that have a multi state nexus can apply for Case Funding from NW3C Investigative Support Services.
