Any opinions on Fuel Plays?
I have BFRE as a speculative play.
http://finance.yahoo.com/q?s=BFRE.PK

It could be a huge winner this year. Only about 21 m. shares.

OPBL is my other play on options on energy trades.

Both stocks have a lot of upside in my opinion, let me know your opinions.

Other possible plays.. PEIX, VSE, CLRK, QTWW.

I am surprised in the lack of interest in this area. I owned FRPT at $3.00 and gave up way to early. The gov't dumped money into the war like crazy. Now with a new government, money should start flowing to the Alt energy industry (not as much as defense). With more funding can these stocks move like FRPT? I think so.

Not a great time for these given the dramatic decrease in oil prices. They will be the hot item sooner than later though IMO.

I'm in NVBF for what it's worth...

Alternative energy might take a while in my opinion. You will definitely not get your money's worth in the next couple of months. Good long term play though.

With the oil prices dropping I'm looking for better ops in this area also. One way of finding some of these smaller companies is looking at who's attending the alt energy conferences.
Surfing around just pinching through.
checking this site out now http://www.vogelbusch.com/
TECHNOLOGY: Alcohol: Bioethanol
Bioethanol - a source of renewable energy

With the search for alternative renewable energy sources, biofuels are fast becoming a viable solution, as they are non-fossil fuels from a renewable agricultural source, resulting in cleaner combustion.
Liquid biofuels are mainly developed as a vehicle fuel. At present the major players are biodiesel (methylester of vegetable oils, typically rapeseed or sunflower oil), and bioethanol.

Bioethanol is a readily available, clean fuel that can be utilized in combustion engines in different ways:

Hydrous ethanol (95 percent by volume) contains some water. It is used directly as a gasoline substitute in cars with modified engines.
Anhydrous (or dehydrated) ethanol is free of water and at least 99 percent pure. This ethanol can be blended with conventional fuel in proportions of between 5 and 85 percent (E85). As a 5 percent additive it can be used in modern engines without modification. Higher blends require modified engines as run on so-called flexible fuel vehicles.
Finally, bioethanol is also used to manufacture ETBE (ethyl-tertiary-butyl-ether), a fuel additive for conventional petrol.
Basically alcohol, bioethanol is made from starch plants (grain, mostly corn, and tubers like cassava); sugar plants (sugar beet or sugar cane); and - although large-scale still in the preliminary stages - from cellulose plants. Bioethanol is obtained using biological production technology, which is fermentation and subsequent enrichment by distillation/rectification and dehydration, the core technologies of Vogelbusch.

Benefits from bioethanol

renewable resources
impact on air quality due to cleaner combustion
reduced net carbon dioxide (greenhouse gas) emissions
energy security: less dependence on crude oil
expanded market opportunity in the agricultural field

TTEG is a company producing turbine engines for trucks, these things are going to increase efficiency by 66% or some sick number like that, been holding since .35, i think this one should be a long term winner, as you'll see looking at the press and chart combined

Might be an idea to split this board by sector. That's on my to do list with my watch lists. Would make life a lot easier for sector investing. here is a link to one of the alt energy stocks watch list - some of the picks listed on this thread are on it.

Thanks! I accidentally deleted NECX from my list and since i never traded it I couldn't remember what it was! LOL.

Cheers. Will take some time to find the good ones out of all these and IMO there will be some time.

Instead of Ethanol - I have heard Cellanol being hyped as the latest alternative and BFRE received DOE funding for it.

BlueFire Ethanol Wins U.S. Department of Energy Grant - Wednesday February 28, 12:25 pm ET

New Process Will Promote Energy Independence, Cleaner Environment

IRVINE, CA--(MARKET WIRE)--Feb 28, 2007 -- BlueFire Ethanol, Inc. (Other OTC:BFRE.PK - News) has been awarded up to $40 million from the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) cellulosic ethanol grant program to develop a solid waste biorefinery project at a landfill in Southern California.

"This award clearly recognizes BlueFire as a leading player in the commercialization of cellulosic ethanol," said Arnold Klann, CEO and President of BlueFire Ethanol. "We look forward to building the first commercial cellulosic ethanol plant in the world that can be repeated across the country, turning cellulosic waste from landfills into ethanol."

"BlueFire Ethanol will play a critical role in helping to bring cellulosic ethanol to market, teaching us how to produce it in a more cost effective manner," Secretary Bodman said. "Ultimately, success in producing affordable cellulosic ethanol could be the key to eliminating our nation's addiction to oil. By relying on American ingenuity for fuel, we will enhance our nation's energy and economic security."

The Southern California Biorefinery Project will turn green waste and wood residues at landfills into about 19 million gallons of fuel grade ethanol per year. Additional products that will also be sold include lignin, gypsum, and yeast. BlueFires's current production estimates for the project will be significantly lower that DOE's cellulosic ethanol goal of $1.07/gal in production costs by 2012, and DOE's current estimate of approximately $2.26/gal.

Klann added BlueFire will help DOE accelerate its goals for the cellulosic ethanol industry with the successful completion of its project.

"This is an important milestone for BlueFire Ethanol and a significant opportunity to demonstrate the use of new energy supplies in our landfills," he added. "Our biorefinery will enable us to be located directly in the markets with the highest demand for ethanol while helping cities to manage landfill waste."

Construction is expected to begin by the end of this year with start-up expected on or before the end of 2009. BlueFire's process could be repeated at most of the more than 1,600 landfill sites across the nation. Because it captures the more potent greenhouse gas methane as part of its process as well as provide renewable fuel, BlueFire will reduce greenhouse gases that cause global warming.

All of the ethanol produced will be sold under the terms of a long-term contract with Petro-Diamond, Inc., a wholly owned Mitsubishi Corp. subsidiary. Colmac Energy will purchase all of the lignin produced for use as boiler fuel for its biomass power plant located in Riverside County. The gypsum will be sold to local landscape wholesalers and the yeast will be sold as an animal feed supplement.

In February 2006, DOE announced a $160 million grant program that would provide cost-share funding over four years to build up to three U.S. biorefineries. The program's goal is to demonstrate that commercial biorefineries can be profitable once initial construction costs are paid. Projects are required to show a 60/40 (industry/government) cost share.

Quick question with ethanol plays in general - do you think that US cars will convert to be able to accept ethanol? I don't know anybody that can put ethanol in their car - do you?

Ethanol will NEVER replace gasoline. If you do your homework you will find that the entire US corn and soy crops (if converted to ethanol and biodiesel respectively) are only enough to compensate 10-13% of domestic fuel demand. Also, it takes about a gallon of gasoline to make an equivilant unit of ethanol.

Ethanol companies can still be good investments/trades, but do not expect to see it replacing gasoline.

Italian truffle hunter and trader Cristiano Savini smells a 1.5kg (3.3lb) white truffle of Tuscany in downtown Rome November 27, 2007. Savini spent more than an hour digging down 80cm (2.6ft) to find the largest truffle unearthed in half a century, at a countryside spot near Pisa. The truffle is expected to break auction records by fetching more than $206,000, according to the auction organizer.
