Actually, the reference I heard was on some one of the cable tv networks (CNN or MSNBC, I believe) and the 72% figure was of real estate actually owned by non-governments in the whole world (I'd have guessed the the Catholic church was the largest such land owner, but maybe they consider it to be a nation????). It struck me as too large a percentage at the time, but as I was deciding I had misheard the figure, they repeated it, 72%.
I do know that as of the 1980s, Lady Bird Johnson owned the largest amount of Alabama in non-government possession that was not owned by some corporation. She owned about that same number of acres in East Texas as well, but not so much as what is left of some of the vast ranches that once were.
